Right to Read Weeks-February 19th-March 1st
To go with our letter “R” weeks, we will be kicking off two weeks of reading fun! We are hoping for each preschool family to spend some time during these two weeks reading together using the following reading plans. After you have completed a reading plan, please turn it in to Mrs. Cindy at the preschool office. You then get to pick a prize out of the treasure box and pick out a piece of popcorn to add to your class popcorn bag. When each class reaches their popcorn goal, they will have a class popcorn party to celebrate!
Panda Bear Class Reading Plan
You may read five books of your choice together. Please list the name of the five books that you have read, and the name of the author on a piece of paper. This is what you can turn in to Mrs. Cindy, in the preschool office, to get a prize from the treasure chest and earn a piece of popcorn, with your name on it, for your class! (You may repeat this plan a few times, if you desire.)
Very Hungry Caterpillar and Very Busy Spider Classes Reading Plans
Level 1
To start Right to Read week, we would like you to read 10 books together total. Five of the books, can be of your choice. The next five books are as follows: one book by Dr Seuss, one book by Maurice Sendak, one book by Ezra Jack Keats, one book by Lois Ehlert, and a few poems by Shel Silverstein. Please list the names of the books you have read, including the authors, and the names of the poems by Shel Silverstein, and turn the list into the preschool office. Mrs. Cindy will then give you a piece of popcorn, with your name on it, to add to your class popcorn bag, and let you pick a treasure from the treasure chest! If you complete level one before the end of the right to read weeks, you may move on to Level 2!
Level 2
For level two reading, you may pick five books of your choice. Then pick one book by Eric Carle, one book by Donald Crews, one book by Margaret Wise Brown, a Caldecott Award winning book, and some poems by Jack Prelutsky. Next, record the books, authors, and poems on a piece of paper to turn in at the preschool office. You will get to pick another prize from the prize box, and add TWO pieces of popcorn, with your name on them, to the class popcorn bag! If you complete level two before the end of the right to read weeks, you may move on to Level 3!
Level 3
For level three reading, we would like to expand your child’s world of print. We would like you to start by reading a simple chapter book together. (This may take a few nights.) Some good chapter books are Toad and Frog books, Nate the Great books, Amelia Bedilia books, Junie B. Jones, (Please note they do use the word “stupid” in some of these books), etc. We would then like you to pick two of the following to explore and read (parts of) together: An atlas, a dictionary, a newspaper, a children’s magazine, or an encyclopedia. (Wiki-pedia is fine.) Try to make sure to point out what each from of print is used for. Please record your selections on a piece of paper, making notes about what you read. For example, if you chose the newspaper, and read the comics together, please note this on your recording sheet, etc. When you complete level three, please turn your recording sheet in to Mrs. Cindy in the preschool office. You will then be able to select a treasure from the treasure box, add THREE pieces of popcorn, with your name on them, to the class popcorn bag, and receive a special certificate acknowledging that you completed all three reading levels!
